The Project Torch Foundation offers support to athletes who are selected by committee. Selection relies on a number of key determinants, including financial need, athletic/competitive promise, commitment to wrestling, individual character, sportsmanship, and, when applicable, academic performance.
Two umbrella programs have been established that provide training and the range of other resources that benefit the athletes in their training and competitive endeavors:
This program focuses on providing partial to full tuition scholarships for young athletes to receive supplemental training at the Overtime School of Wrestling. It also provides financial assistance for the cost of travel, tournament fees, and supplies for national level competition, as well as support for participation in international competition.
Eligibility: Students
who might not otherwise have the opportunity
to train at a high level early in their wrestling career, or athletes who would not be able to participate in national/international competitions due to financial hardship receive consideration for Youth Development and Outreach benefits.
This program focuses on subsidizing the costs of supplemental training and
competitive opportunities for an expanded
of World and Olympic level athletes. The Senior level training camps held several times per year at the Overtime Training Center allow more top college and senior athletes to train together more often than they would otherwise. Financial assistance is provided to these athletes for the cost of participating in the most challenging national and international competitive events.
A recent initiative to start an international training exchange program provides unique opportunities to increase technical skill and competitive experience by bringing in top tier foreign athletes to train for a significant period of time along with our own athletes from youth to the senior level.
This kind of training and competitive exchange program with foreign athletes is especially important to the development of younger wrestlers. It provides exposure to foreign technique and style, and is key to cultivating a competitive mental composure that prepares the athletes for long term confidence on and off the mat.
Moreover, an exchange program is a very cost effective way of maximizing training hours and coaching efforts. One athlete may spend significant funds to attend one tournament and gain a few good matches, while spending the same amount of money on bringing a group of outstanding foreign athletes to train in the U.S. provides many athletes a chance to train intensively for a period of days.
